The Medical Sciences Semester (MSS) is designed for high-achieving high school students who are curious about a profession in medicine, passionate about helping others, and motivated to explore the rapidly evolving world of medicine and healthcare.
At its heart, the program is about connecting learning to purpose—giving students the opportunity to step beyond textbooks and experience the real challenges and possibilities of the medical sciences.
MSS students benefit from unparalleled access to Cleveland’s world-renowned medical community providing students with opportunities to learn from leading professionals, explore potential career paths, and apply their classroom learning to real-world medical challenges.
Each semester, 24 students from Hawken and around the world will come together to live and learn on Hawken’s University Circle Campus. Students will be immersed in all of the different aspects of Cleveland’s healthcare industry, from completing medical rounds at Cleveland's world renowned hospitals to volunteering with local public health groups, and visiting biotechnology companies, students will gain a broad understanding of the different careers in the medical profession.
Each aspect of the Medical semester is designed to provide students with hands-on experiences while also helping them build the skills needed to be successful in their continued studies. Students will get a head start in their future studies, by strengthening the specific skills identified in the
Association of American Medical School’s Premed Competencies which was developed in 2024 to evaluate applicant’s readiness for medical school.
